Facebook Pages now publishable outside the wall

I’ve noted before that Facebook Pages (not personal profiles) have some growing up to do. One of the features I’ve been waiting for is to have Facebook Page updates published somewhere OUTSIDE Facebook. Pages are public and Google can find them, but there was no way to have updates on the Page republished or cross-posted somewhere else.

Until now. Facebook released a Twitter Exporter Tool that allows Page updates to go out to Twitter. Finally a step in the right (or outside the wall) direction!

It’s not the cleanest way to republish your Facebook Page content … Continue Reading

Maximizing Facebook Pages

Facebook Groups and PagesFacebook Pages are great ways to get your brand on Facebook. It’s a better solution for exetnding your brand into Facebook when compared to having a profile or using Facebook Groups. In short, the advantage of using a Page vs a Group are:

  1. Facebook Pages are public outside of Facebook (Google can find it)
  2. Facebook Groups are private inside Facebook (only Facebook people see Groups)
  3. To join a Facebook Page, you become a Fan. Updates from the Page are pushed into fan’s News Feed.
  4. To join a … Continue Reading

Organizing FriendFeed with Lists and Groups

Organize FriendFeed with Lists and GroupsI’m a big fan of FriendFeed for several reasons, but one thing I really like about it is the ability to set up lists and groups to help me manage the folks I follow.

Steve Rubel wrote last week about Five Fantastic Friendfeed Filters for Flow and I agree with him on it. On the left you’ll see a screenshot of the lists and groups I’m currently using.

There are 2 significant differences in lists and groups on FriendFeed: 1. Lists are … Continue Reading

If you are already familiar with RSS and use it, this post is not for you. Check out the sidebars for other things to do for now. This is for people who do not use or understand the idea of subscribing to websites but want to learn.

You’ll notice here at Orangejack, we offer several ways to subscribe to us, including RSS. Let’s get the irrelevant stuff out of the way first. RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. All that means is that there are agreed-upon … Continue Reading

Submit New Website Where?

You may have seen services that will submit your website to hundreds of search engines. Some do it for free while others charge you.

Before you do that, stop and ask yourself a simple question: can you think of more than six?

I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to do that. Truth is, Google is the dominant search engine and if they know about you chances are everyone else will. But do you even need to tell Google you exist? Not really. If a site Google already knows about links to you, Google will find you.

However, it’s not a … Continue Reading

Setting FriendFeed Defaults

If you’re using FriendFeed (and many more people are nowadays), there are a couple of default settings I feel everyone should set up. Please? This isn’t a post to convince you to use it or why you should. It’s for people already on there or thinking about going there though I added some thoughts about it at the end.

At the top of your FriendFeed profile page you’ll see room for some bio information. See mine. You’ll see there is a link off to the right you can make edits to your settings.

Twitter has Email Equivalents

I’ve been thinking about a way to think of Twitter in a way that most people could relate:
Twitter is like an email with a no subject line and a short statement in the body.
As you probably know, you only get 140 characters to publish something on Twitter and that’s all you get.  It’s a statement where you share something.

2009-03-16_124817Twitter allows people to direct their updates to particular people as well as all people (Twitter is public), and tag their messages for certain subjects just like email:
