Social Media is Recession-proof

Well, sorta.

I know times are tough with income and budgets.  Unfortunately, the wrong areas often get cut during tough times.

Personally, we’re cutting out gym membership – something we probably need the most but we think we can make it on our own.  Truth be told, we probably won’t be as effective at losing weight and getting in shape than we would be if we committed to the gym.  But we’re looking to make financial cuts.

Businesses are also feeling the budget crunch so many are cutting back on marketing.  Just like us cutting back on the gym membership, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to stop telling people you have something to offer.  Going at it alone might get you along but we both know it’s not as effective as having professionals help you.

I understand why we feel we’re forced to make that decision.  But if I may…

Cutting back in marketing budgets is one option.  Another option is to be more efficient with a smaller marketing budget.  More people are going online to get news and find what they need than ever before. Showing up with an answer when they ask is half of the battle.  The other half is finding the question asked that you can answer.

This is where social media steps in.  Have you heard the phrase “build your network before you need them“? Now is your chance.  Connecting with appropriate people in spaces like Twitter, blog commenting, blog publishing, videos, photos, Facebook groups and LinkedIN professional profiles doesn’t require a lot of work (connect with me in these places).  The price is pretty much the time you put into it.

This is the area where you can grow your network.  Now, let me also say that if you are getting into social media just so that you can sell to them later, be careful.  Instead connect with like-minded folks and make real relationships. People are more motivated to do business with someone they know and social media gives you the opportunity to get to know them!
